Question : How was the band created?

In 2005 I fell in love with a man that I could not have and in my desperation and frustration I wrote about him in many ways. I naturally started to write in verse like a poem. Because I was writing all the time; on the bus, while I walked, while I cooked, at night alone, I started to sing along, simple tunes to my words. I thought, “ Hey some of this is quite good” and I wanted to remember it, so I picked up a guitar to try to find chords. From there it went from one poem to the next until I had a little repertoire of songs in a book.

I always loved the Blues and thought it would be amazing to have my own blues band. I was singing backing vocals at the time in a rock band with Mike Khan and he encouraged me and helped me with my singing. Then one evening we were at a party and Joe was there with his guitar. He started to play and I thought he was great. He was so approachable that I asked him if he would be interested to start a band with me. He agreed to come to my home and I played him all my songs and as he listened, he started to play riffs and rhythms around them. It was very exciting to hear my simple tunes take shape. After that I asked Thomas’s friend from school, Jack Stanley to come and play piano with us. The three of us met every week. Through advertising I found a drummer and a bassist and within a year I got my first gig.

Question : Where does the name Winnet come from?

When I was with London City Ballet, one day I had my hair done in a shaggy perm. It wasn’t my best look and one of the dancers laughed, endearingly and said, “You look like you have a head of Winnets.” I didn’t know what Winnets were until she told me. Dags and Winnets are pooh and mud that hang off the back of sheep’s bums. The name Winnet somehow stuck with me in the company and soon everyone called me Winnet, even after my hair grew out. I went up on the cast sheet as Winnet and a solo from Paquita that I often danced became known as ‘The Winnet Solo’. So because I was so used to being called Winnet I thought it would be a good name for my band as it could refer to the band and to me all in one.

Question : How did the current members of Winnet join the band?

When I started out of course Thomas and Ava were only young and were there supporting me at every gig in the audience. As bass players came and went, Thomas was starting to take a big interest in the guitar. It was Joe who suggested he have a go at the bass and Joe helped him get started. Thomas worked so hard at it, practicing every day, all self taught and now he is a true bass player. Ava sung her heart out about the house for as long as I can remember, so as she got older, I encouraged her to join me on stage as backing singer. As her confidence grew and grew and her voice developed we, step by step started to get her to sing on her own. Now she is my second vocalist and has her own style within the band. And my, it does feels great to have my son on one side of me playing Bass and my daughter on the other sharing the vocals. When my drummer moved on into a proper job, I was without, so I asked Mark, my ex husband if he would step in to help me out. He was great and here is has remained.

When Jack left the band we asked Harrison if he knew a pianist and he ended up with us on the piano and the trumpet. He later brought Greg Evain on board and Harrison reverted to trumpet only. What a tremendous influence and friend he has become.

Sadly after eight years with me Joe had to return to Italy, meaning he would be leaving Winnet, but it is movement and with much excitement that we start a new adventure with this and Winnet. Giorgos Pafitis played our recent gig and Daniel Smith will play the next, so who knows what will immerge.

Question ; How long have you been playing an instrument or singing?

First gig was 2006.

Question : How did music attract you?

Have always had music in the house from when I was very tiny. I used to get up and dance to it all the time with my sisters. Ofcourse it was classical music then, but when I was growing up I would always buy music. My very first single was The Small Faces, Lazy Sunday Afternoon and then Donovan’s Jennifer Juniper. I would spend hours rummaging through the vinyl at markets looking for old Blues albums, Howlin Wolf, Lonesome Sundown, John Lee Hooker, Freddie King…. Oh so many. Music still plays every night in our home.

Question : What are your influences?

They started out with the Blues, (all the above) JJ Cale, Eric Clapton Nina Simone and now it’s more Tom Waits, Kurt Weil and Fado, but all of it, I don’t like to stay with one type.

Question : Does each of the member bring a bit of his style and influences to create/perform a song?

Yes I encourage that from each of them, I love to be open to new ideas, but to keep within the style of the band and the style of each song.

Question ; Who writes the lyrics and melodies of Winnet?

I write all the lyrics and the melody of the vocal line and the musicians write all the riffs and create the feel around it. Sometimes it can start with Joe or Thomas coming with an idea based on a tune and a style and then I write the lyric line in and around that.

Question : How did you reach the musical/performing level you currently have?

We just kept meeting every week and I just kept searching for gig opportunities and arranged recordings. As long as we had a gig or a recording to work towards we had to keep a standard.

Question : How was it to start a band and evolve together?

It is hard work to keep a band together and to keep the enthusiasm especially when there is no money and quiet periods come. I feel the extra pressure because I am an older woman, but I just have to keep faith that we offer something a bit different and I use all my strengths towards each creation and every performance.

Question : This one is for Tasha, Ava, Mark and Thomas: what does it mean for you to perform together as a family? How does it influence the band?

It means a great deal to me to have my family blood support and that they are happy to be with me on the same stage joining our strengths together. I am very proud that my family can share our talents. It is a joy. A joy for me that I have been able to provide this platform for them and a joy that they have helped to keep me on stage, as an artist.

Question : Could you tell us how Winnet prepares for a gig? Do you have a particular thing you always do before you go on stage?

Yes, I always have a little lie in in the morning as gig nights get late. Then a Lovely long relaxed breakfast. I listen to the songs and sing them gently through. I always do my yoga followed by an Indian singing warm up. Then Ava and I turn our attention to hair and wardrobe. The visual is a very important part of what we do and we like to make sure we compliment each other as the two vocalists. We take our time, as we both need to feel relaxed and comfortable in what we wear. It is a fun day together sharing ideas and opinions, while Thomas plays bass in the music room. He gets dressed at the last minute.

Question : How do you feel when you come on stage and see the audience?

I do love this. I feel responsible for them having a great night, so it always feels wonderful when I see and hear them all happy. It makes my job easier when I see a happy audience, yet it feels amazing when I can turn a noisy audience quiet.

Question : Which song is your favorite to perform on stage?

I like each for what it is and I like the feeling of changing moods for a different song. I think An Idea, The List and Faces in a Tree of mine, but also I love performing the Tom Waits covers. I love it when a song finds a new place spontaneously on stage, I think “wow where did that come form”?

Question : What is the thing each of you prefer while performing?

Thomas: “Lots of things. To be on stage with the music performing with my family. Performing on stage is amazing, but to be there with my family is extra special”

“It’s nice to sink back in a song, as the bass player.”

Question : With which celebrity (dead or alive) would you perform a song?

Cesaria Evora. Nina Simone, if she was in the right mood. (not celebrity’s, artists)

Question : Which country would you like to perform in? How would you feel about performing in another country?

The idea of performing abroad thrills me. I would love to perform in France, in Germany in Portugal, America, anywhere I would love to perform anywhere that loves us. It would be a thrill to inspire new audiences everywhere and of course I love to travel but especially for work related purposes as I did with London City Ballet.

Question : If each of you had to describe Winnet in one word, what word would it be?

‘Special’ is my word. Ava’s word is ‘Fun’. Joe says “Creativity”. Mark says, “Velvety’. Greg says. “Seductive” and then Harrison and Artie copied him. Thomas’s word is the best….it’s “Ma”.

Question : What are the new projects of Winnet for 2015?

It is to find a new guitarist and different venues to perform in. To perform at a Festival and to get contacts to perform abroad. I also really want to do some more recordings and get some new material in our sets so that we can start to drop the covers bit by bit. Personally I want to build on my voice and try to find out more about it. I plan to go to Lisbon in June and explore Fado.

Question : What is the question you would like to be asked? The kind of original question people never think about. Can you answer it?

“Would you like to perform on ‘Later With Jools’ in the next season?”

My answer would be, “Thank you. I would love to”.

Question : Anything else you would like to say? Now is the moment, express yourselves!

“Thank you Betsy and Morgane.”

Question : D'où vient le nom Winnet?

Question : Quelles sont vos influences?

Question : Dans quel pays aimeriez-vous vous produire?

Question : Autre chose que vous aimeriez dire? Maintenant c'est le moment, exprimez-vous!

“Merci Betsy et Morgane.”
